UTC - Tier 1 SOLARIS - Safety and Operations of Large Area Rural/urban Intermodal Systems STATEMENT OF WORK Arizona State University researchers will collaborate with researchers from other universities and organizations within the SOLARTS Institute, led by the University of Nevada, Reno. In particular, ASU research efforts will be to collaborate in following areas, including the associated education, outreach and technology transfer activities. AREA 1: Traffic Safety Data Management and Crash Mitigation The research activities in this area involve development of advanced database systems and software tools for improved methods of collecting, managing and analyzing traffic crash data. Measures for mitigating the most common crash types are also our major initiative. The major outcomes from this research area include: (1) improved qualify of safety data through better data collection and inventory; (2) implementation of scientifically sound crash data analysis methodologies and software tools; (3) reduction of injury and fatal crashes in both rural and urban areas, and (4) maximization of the rate of return for all safety project investments. AREA 2 - Technologies for Safe Traffic Operations and Management The research activities in this area involve the application of advanced technologies in improving traffic operations through multimodal and integrated approaches. The major outcomes from this research area include: (1) congestion mitigation to reduce travelers frustration and to promote safe driving; (2) reduction in air pollution and noise to promote livable communities; and (3) minimization of staff labor and human errors in managing and operating regional traffic facilities AREA 3 - Sustainable Transportation Infrastructure and Environment The research activities in this area involve research on transportation infrastructure systems that provide sustainable services to the tri-state area where sparse rural networks and extreme climates are the main characteristics. The major outcomes from this research area include: (1) improved safety, mobility, and environment for tribal lands and rural towns; (2) innovative materials that will prolong the life of pavements and bridges; and (3) expanding and integrating advanced traffic modeling technologies into infrastructure risk analysis under earthquake and other disastrous events. TASK D - CONFERENCE OPERATIONS AND SCHOLARSHIPS Task F: ADDRESSING FIDELITY BETWEEN MESO- AND MICRO-SIMULATIONS TO EVALUATE TRAFFIC FLOWS IN MULTIRESOLUTION MODELING Task G: DEVELOPING AND TESTING PROACTIVE SIGNAL CONTROL STRATEGIES FOR ARTERIAL-FREEWAY DIAMOND INTERCHANGES
