Using Arrays of Microelectrodes Implanted in Residual Peripheral Nerves to Provide Dexterous Control of and Modulated Sensory Feedback from a Hand Prosthesis

Lay Abstract The overarching goal of the proposed project is to provide a prosthetic hand that is controlled by the residual arm nerves of a patient who has suffered a forearm amputation. Due to this direct connection with the arm nerves, the patient will be able to intuitively control and receive touch sensation from the prosthetic hand in a manner similar to their natural hand. The prosthetic hand through its direction connection with the arm nerves will allow complex hand movements, e.g. using a computer keyboard and mouse. The sense of touch provide by the direct connection with the patients arm nerves will allow them to know how much force they are exerting with the hand. The sense of touch provided will allow patients to confidently handle delicate objects and touch other people using the prosthetic hand. The benefits of a prosthetic hand directly connected to a patients arm nerves are the restoration of the ability to perform many daily living and work related activities. The proposed research will determine the type and complexity of movements that can be controlled by a direction connection to arm nerves, and will also determine the type and range touch sensations that can be provide through a direct connection to arm nerves. Further work will be needed to develop a complete prosthetic hand system. Given sufficient resources it should take between 5 10 years to develop a nerve connected prosthetic hand which is ready for wide use by patients with a forearm amputation. This research will be particularly relevant to military service members who have undergone a forearm amputation and could allow then to return to active duty.
