The Southwest Interdisciplinary Research Center (SIRC) at Arizona State University proposal was for the entire School, Student and Parent Strengths-Based Prevention Program. This Scope is specific to the keepin it REAL(kiR) and Families Preparing a New Generation programs. This work aids schools, families and youth in their capacity to live productive lives by building strong and safe environments, enhancing positive attitudes and increasing resiliency. The goals are to Increase youth resiliency by protecting against substance use and risky behaviors; and Provide family support by helping parents to communicate with their children about the risks of substance use by increasing family communication skills. keepin it REAL(kiR) is a culturally grounded drug prevention curriculum for grades 6-9 that has been proven effective for reducing drug use and establishing anti-drug attitudes and beliefs. The kiR program teaches kids HOW to say"no" to alcohol, tobacco and other drugs without losing friendships. The kiR program enhances life skills such as decision-making, communication and drug-resistant strategies. The curriculum includes ten lessons and four videos developed by and for kids which have been tested by researchers with over 7,000 middle-school students in Phoenix, Arizona. The kiR curriculum is identified as a Model Program by the Center for Substance Abuse Programs (CSAP) at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. SAMHSA. This program was developed SIRC. The Families Preparing a New Generation (FPNG) program is a culturally grounded parent education program to improve substance abuse prevention; the 10 session program aims to increase and enhance substance abuse prevention knowledge, skills, and strategies for parents (in this case for parents of 6th, 7th and 8th grade youth). The Hispanic and American Indian adaptations are undergoing random control trials at ASUSIRC sponsored by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The generic version, proposed for use here, showed effective results when tested in the urban Phoenix area through funding to the Phoenix Indian Center from the Parents Commission. These programs, along with the Oleweus Bullying Program, would be offered together at two school sites, not in a major metropolitan area but serving a more rural Arizona community. It is anticipated that a school would engage its entire population of K-8 grade students along with faculty and staff in the Oleweus Bullying Program. Then the 6th, 7th and 8th graders would all also be involved in the keepin it REAL curriculum. The parents of these youth would be invited to participate in the Families Preparing a New Generation program to be held in the evenings. Each of these programs has pre-and post-survey measures already developed and these would be used to gauge the degree of change in the environment and in policies, as well as in the attitudes and behaviors of those involved at all levels. It is anticipated that by combining these efforts, the results will show that these programs are individually effective, but that the degree of change will be larger for all involved when compared to expected results shown in the literature. SIRC team members will train, implement and evaluate the entire project. This will include recruitment of a school and working with school and community members to recruit parents and to participate in school and project activities. This involves work with teachers, parents, and community members to serve as facilitators and recruiters. SIRC will train on both of the curricula, and on survey administration with appropriate personnel conducting the research. SIRC will conduct the data analysis and report on findings.
