As part of the states efforts to decrease obesity in South Phoenix, this project will pilot a Photovoice-based curriculum designed to capture the youth perspective on health, body image, and the food and physical activity environments in the community they live. Photovoice methodology is a combination of photography and focus groups. The specific aims of the method are to enable participants, in this case South Phoenix youth, to: 1. use photographic images to document and reflect on the needs and assets of their community from their own point of view, 2. promote dialogue about salient community issues through group discussion of photographs, and 3. promote social change by communicating issues of both concern and pride to policy makers and society at large. This project will provide a unique opportunity for health care professionals, policy makers, and stakeholders to view the food and physical activity environment, health and body image through the eyes of youth. This is the only way we will be able to make sustainable change.
