Shell Australia Grazing Management Shell Australia Grazing Management The Shell GameChanger Project Meadowlark science and communications team has created a four phase approach to collect statistically robust quantitative data on soil carbon, hydrology and vegetation in Adaptive Multi-Paddock (AMP) grazed ranchlands and in adjacent conventionally grazed ranchlands. In AMP grazing, cattle are herded into a small paddock and then moved to the next paddock once the vegetation has been grazed to a certain point, not being allowed to return to grazed areas until vegetation has recovered. This purposeful resting of land, unusual in conventional grazing, has shown promise for sequestering significant amounts of carbon, improving water infiltration and retention, increasing biodiversity of soil microbiology and wildlife, and ultimately improving animal welfare and rancher well-being. Scope Outline and Phasing Progression from one phase to the next is supported by a debriefing by the Project Meadowlark team to Shell Australias team on what has been learned, followed by a stage gate decision process executed by Shell Australias Decision Review Board (DRB). This proposal explains the four phases envisioned under this program (Figure 1). The program is designed to ramp up quickly and engage key Australian ranchers previously identified and inventoried by our Australian partners, with the goal to deliver and report carbon testing and other results to Shell Australia within a period of 9-12 months from the start of the project. The results will show whether conversion to AMP grazing can sequester large amounts of soil carbon on Australian rangelands.
