Description

PROJECT ELEMENTS: 1) Renewal of REU Site NSF 1263374; 2) Project title: "REU Site: The Mathematical and Theoretical Biology Institute (MTBI)"; 3) PI: Carlos Castillo-Chavez; 4) Submitting organization: Arizona State University (ASU); 5) No other organizations involved; 6) Location(s): ASU Tempe campus; 7) Main field(s) and sub-field(s) of research: Mathematical biology and applied mathematics; 8) 10 NSF-funded undergraduate participants; an additional 7-10 funded by ASU; 9) Summer REU; 10) Eight (8) week program; 11) No RET; 12) Point-of-contact for student applicants: Cynthia Romero, 480-965-1690, Cynthia.B.Romero@asu.edu; 13) Web address: https://mtbi.asu.edu The objectives of the MTBI Summer Research Program are to encourage, facilitate, accelerate access and completion of graduate studies by mostly underrepresented minority (URM) students in mathematics and science or at the interface. The MTBI Summer Program at ASU exposes undergraduates to scientific research by introducing them to methods in applied mathematics and letting them address relevant questions in theoretical biology. Success is measured directly by the quality of the student reports, and by the acceptance to and completion of graduate school by our students.
