Description

Qatar-Sudan Archaeological Project: Bioarchaeology of Nubia Expedition (BONE) Project Qatar-Sudan Archaeological Project: Bioarchaeology of Nubia Expedition (2) Expected activity in the coming season: a) Survey/reconnaissance (max. 150 words): In the fall of 2008, a systematic examination of satellite imagery was conducted at ASU to identify potential archaeological sites. Possible sites were flagged for ground checking in the field. Only a small number of these flagged locations could be visited during the 2009 MDASP field season, but our limited ground proofing showed that this method had substantial success. Multiple cemeteries and a large rock gong were recorded. In Year 1 of this project, therefore, one month will be dedicated to field verification of flagged sites on the north (right) bank and additional ground survey will be conducted in areas with substantial site density or suitable outcrops for rock art. Sites will be documented with photographs, notes, and GPS locations/perimeters, and surface collections where disturbance has occurred. Assessments of site integrity and endangerment will be used to create a prioritized list for mapping and excavation.
