Description

Nutri-Finch Testing a Oil-based antioxidant remedy for emerging infectious avian pathogens and immune booster Nutri-Finch Testing a Oil-based antioxidant remedy for emerging infectious avian pathogens and immune booster Many wildlife diseases harm or kill millions of animals, and while considerable scientific attention is paid to these outbreaks (e.g. epidemiologically, evolutionarily, human-impacts) few intervention programs have been developed to limit the spread of or ameliorate the effects of the disease. Disseminating vaccines or other medical treatments to wildlife is challenging, if not ultimately harmful ecologically (i.e. spreading antibiotics to some healthy portions of a population), but there is the opportunity to develop nutritional treatments, such as antioxidant enrichment, that boost the immune system of free-ranging animals. With avian diseases spreading worldwide (e.g. bird flu, mycoplasma) and with our expertise in avian immunology and nutrition, we propose a collaboration with Central Garden& Pet in which we investigate the possibility that an oil-based antioxidant supplement can be engineered with immune-enhancing properties and offered to free-ranging birds in seed mixes to combat disease in the many species that will visit backyard feeders.
