Korean Rural Community Development: Focusing on the Utilization of Water Resources in Rural Community Korean Rural Community Development: Focusing on the Utilization of Water Resources in Rural Communities Currently, the rural community in Korea has been facing sustainability issues such as the depopulation of the area, the declination of an income, and deficiency in the sense of pride. For example, the rural population of Korea has sharply reduced and the majority of the population is even aged people. On the contrary, most cities have constantly expanded with increase of urbanization ratio to 91% in 2011 from 37.2% in the 1960s. Given the circumstance and in order to revive the rural communities, it is critically important to revitalize the development of these areas especially based on the utilization of their own resources. For instance, water resources of rural areas are one of the crucial items to make community reinforce. In other words, the water resource has much potential to enhance the community sustainability through strengthening the local economy, creating jobs, and acknowledging the authenticity of the place. Accordingly, it is valuable to conduct the well-implemented the case study investigating a variety of using water resources within the rural areas of the states of Arizona and California, which can lead to increase the opportunities to apply and to regenerate rural areas in Korea. Also, conducting this research will be able to contribute the long-term rural community sustainability with regard to the economic, social and environmental aspects.
