FY 16 Nurse Faculty Loan Program FY16 Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP) This application is to request funds to provide loans to students enrolled in the advanced education nursing programs in the College of Nursing and Health Innovation (CONHI) at Arizona State University (ASU) committed to teaching on completion of their program. The project purpose is to increase the number of qualified nursing faculty prepared at the masters and doctoral level to serve as full-time nurse faculty in schools of nursing within the United States. The purpose is consistent with that of the Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP) . . . to increase the number of qualified nurse faculty authorized by Title VIII of the Public Health Service Act, Section 846A(42 297 n-1)and 847(f) (42 U.S.C. 297o(f)) as amended by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, Public Law 111-148, Section 5311. Priority for funding will be given to doctoral students who are committed to teaching in academic settings following graduation. The Nurse Educator Masters option in the CONHI is designed to provide a transition from Bachelors to Masters (MS), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) depending on the students career goals. Students in the MS program select a concentration in nursing education with a specialty focus in Family Health Promotion. In the PhD program, students may select nursing education as a substantive area of study or take electives. In the DNP program students may take electives and serve as a teaching assistant one semester. The degree programs build on students professional accomplishments to synthesize and implement educational theory, research and technologies to enhance their role as 21st Century nurse educators. Program features of the nurse educator concentration and courses include state-of-the-art instructional technologies, culturally responsive pedagogies, blended delivery (face-to-face & online courses with immersion experiences). With the current national emphasis on expanding doctoral education and preparing educators at the PhD and DNP levels, CONHI continues to make a concerted effort to expand the marketing for these programs and to implement bolder curricular revisions and options that will attract students into the nurse educator roles. Graduates are eligible to sit for NLN National Certification as a Nurse Educator (CNE) once they satisfied the teaching experience requirement (coursework in nursing education reduces work experience requirement). The goals of this project are focused on four major outcomes which are to: (a) continue to provide support for masters and doctoral students in nursing who are preparing to become nurse faculty, (b) to increase the amount of awards to students eligible for NFLP funding with a preference given to doctoral students; (c) to expand the number of students utilizing the NFLP Loan program for financial support of their preparation as nurse educators; and (d) to increase the number of underrepresented minorities who can take advantage of the NFLP program. As of Fall 2014 there were 249 students in the Graduate Program, 179 DNP students, 41 PhD and 29 NED students. There are 2 continuing masters students and one post masters PhD student who plan to continue using funds in 2015-2016. In addition, the goal for 2015-2016 is to make 10 new awards to 6 doctoral students, 4 PhD, 2 DNP and 4 masters students.
