The education and outreach leaders of the EarthScope National Office (ESNO) recognize that there are many organizations providing Earth science education and outreach programs related to EarthScope science topics. Like EarthScope, many of these organizations focus their E&O efforts on the web, at professional conferences such as GSA and AGU, and through workshops and presentations intended for different constituent groups such as K-12 teachers and geoscience researchers. An important role for the ESNO is to provide coordination among all of these organizations so that common formats and standards, diminished redundancy, ease of discovery, and efficient deployment of EarthScope resources (sensu lato) can be achieved. To help us reach these goals, ESNO plans to organize, host, and lead a two-day Earth Science E&O Provider Summit at Tempe in the winter of 2012. Invited participants (about 20) will include E&O personnel and advisors from IRIS, UNAVCO, SCEC, GeoPRISMS, DOSECC, USGS, National Park Service, and other similar organizations. The Provider Summit will be co-facilitated and evaluated by E&O experts from the Science Education Resource Center (SERC) at Carleton College. SERC co-facilitators will assist ESNO E&O personnel in organizing the Provider Summit, will give presentations during the Provider Summit on exemplary design of web-based and other platforms for E&O resources, and will also conduct an external evaluation of the Provider Summit that includes a summative report that will be provided to the ESNO.
