Colloidal Nanocrystal Routes to Inorganic Nanocomposite Thermoelectric Materials

Description

This project will create structurally well-defined nanocomposites by using colloidal nanocrystals and metal-chalcogenide cluster precursors as modular nanocomposite building blocks. The local atomic and electronic band structure of the nanocomposites will be precisely characterized using an aberration-corrected STEM/EELS instrument combination with sub-angstrom spatial-resolution and 0.014 eV energy-resolution. This electronic band structure characterization will be further supported by temperature-dependent optical spectroscopy. A complete suite of thermoelectric property measurements will also be performed on the nanocomposites. Collectively, this projects combination of novel nanocomposite formation, atomistic materials characterization, and thermoelectric measurement suite will enable the targeted discovery of thermoelectric design rules for improved performance.
