Assessing the Impact of Organizational Justice on Academic Entrepreneurship: Qualitative and Quantitative Evidence From University Scientists Assessing the Impact of Organizational Justice on Academic Entrepreneurship: Qualitative and Quantitative Evidence From University Scientists For successful commercialization to occur, there must be healthy interactions among scientists, universities, and firms/entrepreneurs. Through the formal activities of university technology transfer offices (TTOs), both the university and its academic scientists can benefit financially from the subsequent commercialization of intellectual property. Despite the protocols that universities have established to facilitate formal technology transfer, scientists may intentionally avoid university TTOs and engage in informal technology transfer. While formal technology transfer focuses on legal obligations and property rights, informal technology transfer involves the flow of technological knowledge through processes that circumvent the TTO and university. We intend to examine factors that influence informal technology transfer activity on the part of university scientists. Our objective in this project is to analyze the effects of educational efforts on the part of TTOs, championing behavior by university administrators, and faculty perceptions of fairness and equity (i.e., organizational justice) on the propensity of these academics to engage in informal technology transfer. Specifically, we will attempt to attain 30-40 survey respondents from each of 40 institutions. Based on an organizational justice framework, we will examine how aspects of perceived fairness and equity affect the decisions and actions of scientists regarding their technology transfer options. This project adds to our existing research on TTOs, as we aim to delineate the relative importance of psychological, educational, economic, and institutional variables, in terms of predicting informal technology transfer.
