The proposed project will build a new, adaptive and individualized intelligent tutoring system (ITS) for scientific and engineering modeling. The ITS will increase students comprehension of science content compared to baseline instruction, causing a deeper understanding of the domain in less time. It will also accelerate the development of a fundamentally important problem-solving skill that is currently not adequately taught: Modeling. Modeling, according to the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, is the process of choosing and using appropriate mathematics and statistics to analyze empirical situations, to understand them better, and to improve decisions. (CCSSO, 2011, pg. 72; the reference list is an attachment included in section 8 of this document). In other words, modeling is the process of abstracting key properties and quantities of the real world, representing them mathematically, using a tool to calculate the mathematical implications, interpreting the results back into the real world, and repeating this process until the model becomes valid and useful.
